The US Army's Approach to Unmanned Mobility
Automating function in military ground vehicles, both combat and tactical, has tremendous potential to enhance Soldiers’ mission effectiveness while significantly reducing risk to our Warfighters. Autonomous leader-follower convoys may grow efficiencies in the current Army line-haul paradigm, using Soldiers for missions only Soldiers can do. Greater autonomy in combat systems increases stand-off between our warfighters and the threat without degrading combat effectiveness.
The U.S. Army Research, Development and Engineering Command’s Ground Vehicle Systems Center positions the Army at the forefront of autonomous and driverless technology, maintaining relationships with industry leaders to bring the best and latest technology advances to the Army while developing the robotics technology necessary for integration with Army ground vehicles and operation in military-specific environments.
