State of art of CBRN forensics in Police of the Czech Republic and Europe

After a major terrorist attack or industrial incident, first areas of concern are public order, victims, and public health. But, it is also important to secure forensic evidence. Considerable effort has been currently dedicated to recovery and examination of forensic evidence suspected of contamination by CBRN agents.

The Institute of Criminalistics (ICP) is a body of the Czech Republic Police with nation-wide responsibility in the field of forensic science. It is the expert institution listed in the register of the Ministry of Justice. Main activities of the ICP are forensic casework, research and development and methodical activity including training and education towards police forensic and crime scene units and also the justice. The ICP is accredited according ČSN EN ISO/IEC 17025:2005.At the institute we perform forensic examination in 19 fields of forensic science, e.g. fingerprints, DNA examination, chemistry, forensic IT etc.

The approach of responsible bodies in case of contaminated forensic evidence in the Czech Republic and Europe is discussed in the presentation.

Mr. Pavel Kolář has been working at the Institute of Criminalistics since 1984. He held the position forensic scientist in the field of trace evidence examination. Later he was charged with governing research and development and international cooperation activitties of the ICP. He is an active representative of the ICP in the European Network of Forensic Science Institutes. He is the author of a number of publications notably in the field of forensic trace evidence examination.
